Bryan Preserve Mendocino County
When you think of California’s North Coast, what comes to mind? Towering redwood trees? Desolate beaches? Zebras? Yes, zebras! The Bryan Preserve, located in Point Arena in Southern Mendocino County, is a wildlife preserve with two zebra species and several antelope species.
The preserve is dedicated to conserving African hoofstock animals sourced from zoos, wildlife parks, and other preserves. The owners partner with zoos and preserves to encourage genetic diversity among zebra and antelope species.
This involves meticulous genetic record-keeping. Breeding endangered and critically endangered animals is crucial for conservation efforts.
There are over 60 zebras, antelope, and giraffes at the preserve. Many people are unaware that it is open for daily tours.
Bryan Preserve Tours
- A Self-Guided Car Safari where you drive your vehicle.
- A private VIP Tour for up to 8 people.
- A Guided Tour in a Land Rover.
The animals are kept in large fenced enclosures spread throughout the property to provide ample space and reflect their natural habitat. Guests can climb into Land Rovers, which takes them to each feeding area, making for a fun and sometimes bumpy ride.
You will stop at several feeding sites during the tour, where the owner will give background on the animals while providing them with their food. The animals know the drill, and many come close to the feeding areas when they see the truck pull up.
From a distance, you may think that all zebras look alike, but after looking at a herd for a while, you will notice that each zebra has subtle differences in its markings.
Seeing a bunch of zebras side by side at a feeding trough almost feels like an optical illusion. It is hard to see where one zebra starts and the other ends. Depending on the time of year, you may also see newborns.
The antelope at the Preserve is equally stunning, with their beautiful horns and sleek profile. Though they are shyer than the zebras, the males display powerful displays of dominance and watch them run breathtakingly.
The coastal area’s weather is variable and can change quickly. Dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes for uneven terrain and bring a camera and binoculars to capture memories.
If you plan to stay for the weekend, the preserve offers two guest cottages and a fully furnished carriage house. The Chapel Cottage features two bedrooms, a deck, a den, and a hot tub.
The Bridge Cottage and Carriage House are two pet-friendly lodging options at the preserve. Both have two bedrooms, a fireplace, and a hot tub. Pets are not allowed on feeding tours, but a stay includes coffee and tea service and a fully equipped kitchen.
Point Arena has a market to pick up provisions in Gualala, 15 miles to the south. Fresh eggs and vegetables from the garden are offered to the guest, depending on the season.
