Rent a Kayak and Explore the Morro Bay Estuary
Are you looking for a kayaking adventure? Explore 15 miles of protected waters in the stunning Morro Bay Estuary. You can find several outfitters in the area that rent out kayaks and canoes. Kayak Horizons is located at 551 Embarcadero, Morro Bay. Kayak Shack is at the state park, and Sub Sea Tours offers kayaks and whale watching at 699 Embarcadero #9.
Visit Morro Rock
Visitors can drive around Morro Rock, but climbing is prohibited. The rock is a California Historical Landmark and is considered sacred by the Salinan and Chumash tribes due to its past location surrounded by water. Morro Rock stands nearly 600 feet tall and is the final peak of the Nine Sisters range, extending from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.
The rock was mined on and off until 1963, providing material for the breakwater of Morro Bay and Port San Luis Harbor. Nowadays, Morro Rock is a well-known tourist attraction and is also recognized as a bird sanctuary.
Morro Bay Museum of Natural History
The Morro Bay State Park Museum of Natural History showcases exhibits highlighting the area’s geology, oceanography, cultural history, and Native American heritage. There is a lovely outdoor balcony overlooking the bay and Morro Rock from which you can take pictures. There’s a small $3 entrance fee, and parking is free. This museum is well worth a visit, especially if you are traveling with children.
Take a Chablis Harbor Cruise
Enjoy a serene harbor cruise on the Chablis, a two-story riverboat that spans 50 feet long.
