Bernardo Winery is 25 miles north of downtown San Diego and has produced wine for over 100 years. On the grounds and the winery are little wooden cottages that serve as shops and include such artisans as a candle shop and sweet shop.
The Winery is a beautiful and historical place—a rustic oasis in suburbia. You could easily spend several hours here exploring the grounds and shops. It’s worth checking out, and it is a great day trip from San Diego.
Even with most of the surrounding hills covered with homes, the Bernardo Winery is a lovely place to spend a day. You can wander the grounds and window shop while sipping wine, making wine tasting at Bernardo Winery a unique experience.
The winemaking facility is not open for public tours, but guests can book private tours. During the tour, visitors can walk through the historic antique winemaking facility in the winery courtyard. There, they can witness the old methods of winemaking, which involve the use of large-scale redwood vats. Some of these vats date back to before modern winemaking techniques were developed.
Throughout the year, Bernardo Winery hosts various events, including concerts and craft fairs. They offer a wine-tasting menu featuring about 20 wines, primarily from local wineries and a few from northern California.
Shops at the Winery include a variety of stores such as the Rancho Bernardo Historical Museum, a European-style home and garden shop, a handbag and accessory shop, a candle and candle accessory store, a coffee shop, and a Sweet Shoppe.
Wine-tasting prices are reasonable, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Grape juice is available for kids, but no dogs are allowed on site.
Bernardo Winery tasting room is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You get to keep the logo glass. Guided tours are available for large groups with reservations, and the on-site restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. The winery was founded in 1889 and is San Diego County’s oldest Winery. They are also the oldest continuously operating winery in Southern California. The Winery is family-owned and worked and has been since 1927.
You can wander through the grapevines, sip wine on the patio, and shop in specialty stores converted from some of the original Winery buildings. It’s quite a surprise to find this little winery in the middle of Rancho Bernardo’s development.
The Winery makes for a nice day trip because there is so much to see and do. Bernardo Winery 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte, San Diego, California. Winery Website
